Full and Partial Dentures

Dentures: What Are They & Why You Might Need Them?

The ideal situation is to have your own teeth all of your life, but things happen that can change that. When you do lose your teeth, it causes changes in many ways. Your appearance changes, but it also affects your speech and how you eat. Dentures solve these problems. They are dental appliances that are custom made for you, which can consist of a removable frame with artificial teeth, or permanent implants. They last a long time when properly cared for, help maintain your facial structure, restore eating and speaking function and give you back your smile. Affordable quality dentures can give you all that.

Getting Dentures: What Do You Do?

The steps involved in getting new dentures will vary per patient. Typically, impressions of your teeth and gums will be taken by your dentist. He or she will also take certain measurements to ensure a proper fit, as well as the proper bite for you. If you have any teeth that are diseased and need to be extracted, that will be scheduled. Once the teeth are removed, a temporary denture will be put in place. You will get either a full or partial denture depending on how many teeth were removed. If you are getting denture implants, these will be put in place once the teeth are removed.

What Types of Dentures Are There?

There are several options available to you. After assessing your situation, our dentists will help you choose which is best for you. Here are some options:

Full Dentures: What Are They?

When you get a full denture, you are getting complete dentures that replace all of your teeth in the upper and lower jaw. It can mean getting only an upper denture or only the lower plate, or both. If you have had teeth extracted the gums will need to heal before the permanent denture can be put in place. But you will leave with temporary dentures in place until the permanent ones can be fitted. This type of denture can be removed from the mouth. If you are receiving a fixed denture, then implants will hold them in place. Call for an appointment so our dentists can help you choose which is better for you.

When Would You Choose Partial Dentures?

A partial denture can be used when a complete set is not needed. It will replace missing teeth, helping you keep your beautiful smile and supporting the teeth that are there. A partial denture is not a permanent fixture like a bridge, but instead has clasps that attach to teeth to support it. It is removed each night and cleaned.

Flexible Partial Dentures: Are They a Good Option?

Another option is a flexible partial denture. It isn’t made from the traditional rigid material but instead from a flexible, lightweight material with no metal clasps. The clasps and bases of partials are gum-colored and look realistic.

Have You Considered Implant-Supported Dentures?

The big difference between a traditional denture and implant-supported dentures is how they stay in place. The typical denture is slipped into the mouth and rests on the gum. Natural suction and denture cream help hold them in place. With implants, they snap into place. Upper plates are usually stable so implants are typically done for the lower jaw only. They are not designed to stay in indefinitely; you still need to remove them each night and clean them.

All-on-Four Dentures: Wave of the Future?

All-on-Four dentures provide a permanent option. Four implants are placed in the bottom jaw and a full set of artificial teeth is attached to them. Not only is this a fixed denture that doesn’t require regular removal and cleaning, but it also helps you bite in a more natural way and with more power behind your bite.

What Is a Soft Reline for Dentures?

If you have a denture in place already and have had them for some time, a soft denture reline can help if you have developed sore spots or denture pain. The material is pliable and comfortable. Instead of your dentures having the usual hard acrylic lining material, a soft material that remains pliable for up to two years is used. A soft reline may provide freedom from the hassle of denture pain and sore spots.

How Much Do Dentures Cost?

Denture cost is going to vary. There are different factors that are figured into the cost of your dentures, the first being the type of denture you choose. Then there is preparatory treatment—teeth removal, fittings, etc. The material cost to make the denture is another factor.
