Orthodontic Treatment in Northern New Jersey

What is Orthodontics?

Here in Northern New Jersey, orthodontics is one of the main fields of dentistry that is being practiced at the Garden State Dental clinic. Patients of all ages come in for consultations on how to improve their smiles using orthodontic care. Orthodontics specializes in correcting the irregular positioning of the patient’s teeth, or what is commonly known as malocclusion, which is the leading cause of incorrect bite in patients. It is also concerned with the treatment and control of jaw developments in relation to facial growth. These two factors are the main components of orthodontics, whose main goal is to achieve straighter, perfectly aligned teeth to improve a patient’s smile.

What is the significance of orthodontic treatments?

At the Garden State Dental clinic in Northern New Jersey, orthodontics is concerned mainly with the following objectives:

  • Adjusting crooked teeth to set them right
  • Minimizing gaps in between the patient’s teeth
  • Aligning the tips of the teeth to improve bite
  • Improve overall oral function including chewing and speech
  • Enhance gum health
  • Prevent progressive teeth deterioration
  • Correct improper bite

What happens during orthodontic treatment and how soon can it start?

To facilitate the assessment of the patient’s teeth, the dentist usually needs a full clinical examination of the patient’s medical and dental histories. X-ray and other forms of imaging will also help the dentist get an in-depth view of the patient’s teeth and jaw structures, which are crucial in orthodontic treatment. Models of the patient’s teeth, usually made of plaster, are also made to facilitate the initial assessment. After this, the dentist decides on the appropriate treatment plan for the patient. Usually, orthodontic appliances are recommended to straighten crooked teeth and correct misaligned jaws.

What are orthodontic appliances?

Orthodontic appliances are commonly used by dentists to manage malocclusions, and can be classified into fixed and removable devices.

Fixed appliances are precision appliances that are attached onto the teeth surfaces. Disadvantages of using this type include trapped food particles and dietary restrictions. Braces, fixed space retainers, and other special fixed appliances for controlling tongue movement are examples of fixed appliances.

Removable appliances are generally used to treat minor concerns although they have also been noted to be effective in correcting crooked teeth. Examples of removable appliances are headgears, lip bumpers, cheek bumpers, Invisalign aligners, removable retainers, removable space maintainers, and oral splints.
