What is Orthodontics?

What are orthodontic appliances?

Orthodontic appliances are commonly used by dentists to manage malocclusions, and can be classified into fixed and removable devices.

Fixed appliances are precision appliances that are attached onto the teeth surfaces. Disadvantages of using this type include trapped food particles and dietary restrictions. Braces, fixed space retainers, and other special fixed appliances for controlling tongue movement are examples of fixed appliances.

Removable appliances are generally used to treat minor concerns although they have also been noted to be effective in correcting crooked teeth. Examples of removable appliances are headgears, lip bumpers, cheek bumpers, Invisalign aligners, removable retainers, removable space maintainers, and oral splints.
