A radiant smile can leave a lasting impression. Unfortunately, so can a smile tainted by dingy or yellow teeth.

Having whiter teeth is the most commonly-requested treatment, says the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Our office in Newark can remove years of tooth stains and discoloration from your teeth in less than an hour—a perfect way to boost your confidence and look your best before your next family gathering, dinner date, or business meeting.

If you’d prefer to work something into your own schedule at home, we can help you, too. We carry a professional-strength take-home product that can bleach your teeth for minutes a day in less than two weeks, still providing you with dazzling results.

Opalescence Boost: Whiten Your Teeth in a Day

With Opalescence Boost Teeth Whitening, you can whiten your smile while you relax in our care, even on a lunch break. Opalescence Boost uses a chemically activated tooth-whitening gel, so you won’t sit under a hot, uncomfortable light. The gel contains 40% hydrogen peroxide, plus two nourishing ingredients—potassium nitrate and fluoride—proven to minimize sensitivity, help reduce cavities, and harden your natural tooth enamel.

Opalescence Boost is as safe as it is effective. After assessing the current shade of your teeth, we’ll give you special mouth guards to protect your lips and tongue during the treatment. We’ll then apply a resin barrier around your gum line so that the whitening gel only touches your teeth. We’ll apply the gel with a gentle brushed tip, then remove it after 20 minutes and evaluate your tooth color again. If you have more stubborn stains, or if your teeth aren’t quite as bright as you’d like, we can reapply the gel for another 20 minutes. Once we’re finished, you’re free to eat, drink, laugh, and smile naturally.

Opalescence Go®: Impressive Teeth Whitening at Home

Our office in Newark also offers the take-home product Opalescence Go. Available only from dentists, this professional-strength product comes in two strengths of hydrogen peroxide, either capable of producing remarkable results within five to ten days.

The Opalescence Go system is ready to use right out of the package. It features trays prefilled with whitening gel, which includes potassium nitrate and fluoride just like our in-office treatment. The trays are flexible enough to mimic a custom fit.

To whiten your teeth, simply center a tray over your upper or lower teeth, bite gently, and swallow to secure the gel. Remove the colored outer tray to expose the clear and comfortable inner tray for your treatment time. You’ll wear the 10% concentration for 30 to 60 minutes daily or the 15% concentration for 15 to 20 minutes daily.

After the time is up, just toss out the tray and brush your teeth as you normally would. The kit includes enough prefilled trays to last a full course of treatment, so you won’t have to measure or reorder ingredients. Plus, the gel comes in two flavors, mint and melon, for a pleasant taste.

Why Whiten Your Teeth?

There are several reasons that our teeth turn less than white, even if you’ve been diligent about brushing and flossing daily. For starters, tooth enamel—that hard outer layer of teeth—becomes thinner as we age. This occurs about the same time as the dentin—the inner layer—darkens, allowing more of the yellow dentin to show.

If you injure a tooth, your body naturally produces more dentin, which also can cause your tooth to look more yellow.

Tooth enamel also is porous, so it’s susceptible to substances that are known to stain or discolor teeth. These include tobacco products and beverages with intense color pigments, such as colas, coffee, red wine, and tea.

Certain medical treatments and medications also can affect our tooth color. Chemotherapy, radiation around the neck or head, some antibiotics, high blood pressure medicine, antihistamines, and antipsychotics are all known to darken teeth.

Aside from enhancing your natural smile, tooth whitening also can be a good idea before getting restorative dental work, such as a crown, a veneer, a bridge, or dentures. These treatments are color matched to your natural teeth—but they don’t respond to whitening treatments, because they’re stain resistant. So whitening teeth beforehand helps them to blend in better.
