How Do I Care for a Tooth Extraction Site?

After a dental extraction, we will provide you with aftercare instructions and go over them with you. A blood clot will form at the extraction site within a few hours after tooth removal. It is essential you don’t smoke, drink through a straw, or perform any actions which would dislodge the clot in the first 24 to 48 hours. If the clot comes out, you could develop dry socket, a painful condition. Your dentist will also explain what to do if you experience swelling or minor pain in the first 24 hours.

How Long Does Tooth Extraction Healing Normally Take?

You should take it easy the first 24 hours if you have a dental extraction. You can start eating normal food in one to two weeks if the site is healing normally. Molar and surgical extractions will take longer to heal. Once the site heals, you can talk to your dentist about replacing the tooth.
